Vellichor, wooden wick, soy wax candle, Used Book shop scented candle Top: Vellum, Aged Paper Middle: Antique Rugs, Old Hardwoods, Spice Base: Worn Leather, Dust, Tobacco Not to be confused with our Old Books candle, this new scent is of a Used Book Shop, VERY different but one that pairs wonderfully with our Old Books scent. This candle is EVERYTHING! Its nostalgic (but your brain really doesn't know for what), comforting, mysterious... THE SCENT My favorite smell in all the world, that's saying a lot for me! Old books, new books, the distinctive smells that happens when ink hits paper, centuries old wooden floors, must, dusty shelves, radiant heat, stale coffee, worn leather and a little of whatever that second hand store smell is. This scent is nostalgic, mysterious, woody, warm with a little bit of spice and musk. I lived in the city once, long ago and just between two busy roads was a little weird neighborhood with a Seven 11, a church, donut shop, tattoo spot, a bbq joint, church and a perfect little book shop attached to a pawn shop. It had a tattered looking outside, choppy brick, flaking gold leaf letters on the window and dim, flickering lights inviting you in as you walk past on that rainy Sunday. I LOVED the smell of that place! It's a wonderful place to sneak off to, grab a cup of coffee and a donut on the way and spend the day flipping through pages, admiring covers and finding books on things you never dreamed of before. It smells of old moldy paper, worn leather covers and club chairs, oil lamps, spices, tobacco...heaven. You enter to well worn wooden floors covered in equally loved and worn vintage rugs. There are shelves after shelves of all sorts of books. Well loved novels, encyclopedias, self help books, one of a kind books with hand made covers, gardening guides, maps rolled up in tubes, milk crates full of old magazines and booklets, text books with tattered dust covers, even a stack or two of old albums...anything you could want to read. There are towers of paperbacks in corners and on the strange dark staircase that seems to leads to the unmarked basement where only the frequenters go for the really great finds. There is a mezzanine accessed by a staircase you will only see if you enter the hall by the restrooms, that's where the best part is. Theres a little room at the top furnished with yard sale and hand-me-down treasures. A pair of tattered (but very comfy) club chairs, little side tables with reading lamps and a single window in the middle that looks out over the main drag in town. The perfect place to find a cozy seat, pull your hood up and snuggle in with a new discovery, spending much too much time deciding to buy it (and several of its friends) just before the shopkeeper flashes the lights to let you know she'd like to leave for the night. I miss little places like this one. If you are lucky enough to still have one or more of them in your town, visit them, buy something, keep the lights on. Trust me, you'll miss them when they are gone. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• THE WORD Vellichor (noun) (literary) /vell/ik/or/ Penned and coined by John Koenig(2013); he defines it this way- "VELLICHOR (n) The strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time—filled with thousands of old books you’ll never have time to read, each of which is itself locked in its own era, bound and dated and papered over like an old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex littered with thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured."(1) The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows If you haven't read this book, grab a copy, you'll thank me later. Go to your local book shop, they'll be happy to see you and if they don't have it, they'll order it in for you! ****Credit to the Author of this new word, John Koenig**** Koenig, J. (2021). Always consult your veterinarian to be certain that candles can be used in the same space with your familiar and exercise caution with open flames around them. ----CANDLE BURNING INSTRUCTIONS---- The basics of lighting and enjoying your wooden wick candle are simple, but there are a few things to keep in mind: ✂It is IMPORTANT to trim a wooden wick to 1/8” – 3/16”, and no longer. If the wick is too long, the wax will not pull up the wick, and the flame will dim or even extinguish. ⛔️NEVER remove wax from around the wick, it starves the wick and creates a tunnel. If your wooden wick is extinguishing shortly after lighting it, trimming is the problem. Simply give it a trim with wick trimmers, nail clippers or simply snap the char off with your fingers or tap if off with your lighter and remove the wick bits, light it at the wax level and you'll be crackling away!! Although millions of Americans regularly use scented products without any negative effects, it is always possible that a particular fragrance might trigger a negative reaction in a very small percentage of sensitive individuals. Individuals with known sensitivities to specific fragrances may want to avoid products of those scents. In addition, consumers should remember to burn all candles, whether scented or unscented, in a well-ventilated area and test skincare products in a small area before use. **Cleaning out your candle jar to reuse it Hot water can be used to easily and safely remove wax. Place the candle on a stable surface protected with a towel or newspaper. Use a spoon to remove as much wax as you can. Pour very hot water into the container ( I use a regular fill from my coffee pod machine), leaving room at the top. The hot water will melt the wax and it will float to the top. Let the water cool overnight and simply pop out the wax “cookie” that formed on top of the water. Strain the water to get rid of any small wax bits (Don’t pour wax down the drain) ! I pour mine into a used coffee filter after I’ve brewed a pot and toss the filter, coffee and wax (remove wick tab) into my compost. Wipe any remaining wax and clean with hot soap and water or pop it in the dishwasher.**
