Presided over by Chief Justice William Stoughton, the court was made up of magistrates and jurors. The first to be tried was Bridget Bishop of Salem who was found guilty and was hanged on June 10. Thirteen women and five men from all stations of life followed her to the gallows on three successive hanging days before the court was disbanded by Governor William Phipps in October of that year. The Superior Court of Judicature, formed to replace the “witchcraft” court, did not allow spectral evidence. This belief in the power of the accused to use their invisible shapes or spectres to torture their victims had sealed the fates of those tried by the Court of Oyer and Terminer. The new court released those awaiting trial and pardoned those awaiting execution. In effect, the Salem Witch Trials were over. As years passed, apologies were offered and restitution was made to the victims and families. Historians and sociologists have examined this most complex episode in our history so that we may understand the issues of that era and view subsequent events with heightened awareness. The parallels between the Salem Witch Trials and more modem examples of witch hunting like the McCarthy hearings of the 1950's, are remarkable. If the wick is too long, the wax will not pull up the wick, and the flame will dim or even extinguish. NEVER remove wax from around the wick, it starves the wick and creates a tunnel. If your wooden wick is extinguishing shortly after lighting it, trimming is the problem. Simply give it a trim with wick trimmers, nail clippers or simply snap the char off with your fingers or tap if off with your lighter and remove the wick bits, light it at the wax level and you'll be crackling away!! Although millions of Americans regularly use scented products without any negative effects, it is always possible that a particular fragrance might trigger a negative reaction in a very small percentage of sensitive individuals. Individuals with known sensitivities to specific fragrances may want to avoid products of those scents. In addition, consumers should remember to burn all candles, whether scented or unscented, in a well-ventilated area and test skincare products in a small area before use. **Cleaning out your candle jar to reuse it Hot water can be used to easily and safely remove wax. Place the candle on a stable surface protected with a towel or newspaper. Use a spoon to remove as much wax as you can. Pour very hot water into the container ( I use a regular fill from my coffee pod machine), leaving room at the top. The hot water will melt the wax and it will float to the top. Let the water cool overnight and simply pop out the wax cookie that formed on top of the water. Strain the water to get rid of any small wax bits (Don't pour wax down the drain) ! I pour mine into a used coffee filter after I've brewed a pot and toss the filter, coffee and wax (remove wick tab) into my compost. Wipe any remaining wax and clean with hot soap and water or pop it in the dishwasher.**
